You will find a variety of knitting and crochet classes to suit all levels of ability at Jenny Wren’s. See below for more details.

Terms and conditions

Class fees are payable in full on booking.
If you are unable to attend a class please give us a minimum of 2 weeks notice.
If you give less than 2 weeks notice and your cancellation means that the class will fall below the minimum number needed to run, you will only get a refund if we are able to fill your place. If we are unable to fill your place, no refund or chance to swap your booking will be offered. Cancelling with less than 24 hours will get no refund.
We reserve the right to cancel classes in unusual circumstances, however, we try to avoid this if at all possible. If we have to cancel a class you will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to book another class at a later date if possible.

Ever wanted to learn how to crochet? Tried learning from a book? At Jenny Wren’s you can attend a class to get you started.

Skills you will learn:

Holding the hook and yarn.
Creating a chain
Double crochet and treble crochet stitches.
Getting started making granny squares.

You will finish the class with new-found skills, enough to start creating some simple pieces.

Improver Crochet Classes

This class is the ideal follow on from our Beginners class and offers you the opportunity to move on from the granny square to explore other shapes and stitches. We will explore pattern reading and ways we can make them easier to understand with the use of charts, diagrams and symbols. You should leave the class feeling more confident about tackling those beautiful creations you have been longing to make!
Please be aware that this is not a beginners class, crochet knowledge is required. You will need to know the basic crochet stitches to gain the most from this class.

Freeform Crochet

Unleash you inner creativity and join us for a session exploring Freeform Crochet. You’ll be given the freedom to explore shape and form to create unique and individual shapes and patterns.

An Introduction to Crochet Amigurumi

This is a fun introduction to the world of amigurumi – using shaping in crochet to make creatures galore. Once you begin to see how simple techniques can produce different shapes – the internet is your oyster!!! Watch out Pinterest!!
We will be making a jellyfish and you will find out about the magic circle, spiral crochet and shaping. We will look at pattern reading too.
Some experience helps. You will need a 2 or 2.5 mm hook and we will provide the rest.

Beyond the Granny Square – Next Steps in Crochet

In this class you will explore different shapes other than the traditional granny square. You will work on a small project(either a pin cushion, phone sock or small purse) and will learn how to join shapes together, how to increase and decrease as well as how to follow a pattern.

Tapestry Crochet

Come and find out how to add pattern and pictures to your crochet! An introduction to tapestry crochet, where you will learn how to work with more than one colour; read and design colour charts and play!! You will need to know how to double crochet and bring a 4mm hook. We will provide tea, cakes and colours to play with.

Knitting Classes

Beginner Knitting

Are your knitting skills a bit rusty? Did you learn as a child and want to refresh your memory? Or are you a complete beginner with a desire to learn a new craft?
This class will teach you how to cast on, knit and purl stitch and how to use them to make rib and other stitch patterns, and how to cast off.
You will be given a pair of needles to take away to practice your new found skills.

Introduction to Colourwork

Knitting in the Round

Does the thought of knitting on circular needles scare you? And what are DPN’s when they’re at home?!
In this class we will get you on your way with knitting in the round by working on either a hat on circular and double pointed needles, or a cowl just on circular needles, the patterns will be provided. The hat pattern is Barley Hat by Tin Can Knits and the cowl pattern is Oats, also by Tin Can Knits
For this class a basic knowledge of knitting is recommended (casting on, knit, purl).
You will also need for the hat project 4mm 40cm circular needles and 5mm 40cm circular needles and dpns and approx 65 metres of aran weight light coloured yarn.
For the cowl project you will need a 5mm 40cm circular needle and approx 70 metres of aran weight yarn. You can bring your own or buy them from us at a 10% discount.

Finishing Techniques Masterclass

Knit your own Socks with Cybele

In this class Cybele will take you through the techniques of sock construction on double pointed needles. You will work on your own mini sock during the class, and using those principles and the free pattern you will be given as part of the class, you will gain the skills to make your own full sized socks at home.
Skills required: A good knowledge of how to knit on double pointed needles. This class is not intended as a beginner class for those wishing to learn the techniques of knitting on double pointed needles. We do run more suitable classes for getting you started on dpn’s.
Materials are not included in the class cost. You will need to bring a set of 2.5mm double pointed needles and a small amount of 4 ply yarn. You may bring your own or purchase at the shop at a 10% discount.

Continental Knitting Masterclass

If you learnt to knit in Britain, chances are you use the English method. There are however, almost as many ways of knitting as there are knitters. Continental knitting is another way of holding the yarn and making your stitches, and will speed up your knitting. It helps with Fair Isle motifs, can be much easier if you are left-handed and can relieve aches and pains that are caused when you spend a lot of time with yarn and needles.

In this class you will learn how to knit and purl while holding the yarn in your left hand. Please bring a pair of straight 4mm needles to the class. This class is for intermediate knitters.

Freeform Weaving Workshop

Sharon Taylor of Taylor Made Yarns will lead this class teaching free style weaving, enabling you to create your own woven wall hanging. You will be using commercial yarn and some Taylor Made Yarns very own hand spun yarns & hand dyed locks. The use of hand spun yarns brings texture to your weaving, as does the addition of materials such as stones crystals silk flowers and beads. Please feel free to bring along any suitable items to include in your hanging.

All materials for the weaving are included but feel free to bring items to add to your weaving. Tea/Coffee and cake are included but please bring your own lunch.

Introduction to Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian Crochet produces a knit-look fabric but with a crochet hook! The resulting fabric is thicker than crochet and is best suited to blankets and cozy winter garments.
In this class you will be taught the basic Tunisian Crochet stitches.

You will be provided with a tunisian crochet hook to take away and handouts to cover what you’ve learned, as well as refreshments and homemade cake!

Cable Knitting

Have you always admired cabled knitting but thought it was far too complicated to attempt? The good news is, if you can plait, you can knit cables.
We start the class with simple twisted stitches, before moving onto simple cables and a more complicated motif. You will also be shown how to knit cables without a cable needle.
Some knitting experience is required for this class (casting on, knit, purl and casting off).

You will need to bring a pair of 4mm knitting needles and a cable needle. All other materials will be provided.

Knitting on Double Pointed Needles Masterclass

Have you tried using dpn’s only to get in a terrible tangle? Are you put off even trying them and have no idea where to start? In this masterclass you will be shown how to get to grips with double pointed needles. We will guide you through the cast on, which is often the most tricky part, and help you on your way to success! You just need to know how to knit and purl.
You will need to bring a set of 4mm double pointed needles. If you don’t have them, they can be purchased from the shop at a 10% discount.

Christmas Crochet

This is a fun class for those with some knowledge of crochet. You will learn how quick and easy it is to work some seasonal shapes that should inspire you to make lovely Christmas decorations.
Please note, this is not a beginners class, a knowledge of the three basic stitches is required for you to get the most out of this class. You will need to bring size 4mm, 5mm and 6mm crochet hooks if you have them

First Crochet Projects – Crochet Bunting

Have a fun afternoon learning how to make crochet bunting.
Bunting can be made as plain or colourful as you like, and in any of your favourite stitches, it’s easy once you know how! The pattern combinations are endless, there will be time to try out a few, and hopefully you will go away with ideas for your own creations. You don’t need to be very experienced, but a good understanding of the basic stitches* is essential if you are to get the most out of this class, and please feel free to bring along your favourite hooks.
*Basic stitches required: Double crochet, half treble and treble.

Cast On, Cast Off Masterclass with Gillian Fulton

Do you always cast on and cast off the same way? Then come along and learn some alternatives which will improve the appearance of your projects.
We will include basic 2 needle and thumb cast-ons, as well as invisible, provisional, Eastern, Channel-Island, and 2-colour variations.
Your casting-off will include suspended, invisible, and tubular methods, and more if we have time!
Have fun while expanding your repertoire.

Requirements: 4mm needles, both straight and dpns; any 2 shades of dk wool or wool-mix yarn, preferably in a light colour. Only small amounts are needed for making your samples.

Lace Knitting for Beginners with Gillian Fulton

Come and enjoy an afternoon learning the techniques and pattern instructions involved in lace knitting.
We will cover different ways of increasing and decreasing, including decorative aspects.
Learn how to place “holes” and how yarn movements affect the size of them.
We will learn how to do a provisional cast on and graft stitches.
You will have notes and will work on samples to take home for reference.

Requirements: A 50g ball of 4ply yarn and 4.5mm needles for samples.
Generally lace is done with a finer yarn than this and you are welcome to use whatever you fancy!

Mosaic Knitting

Mosaic knitting is a relatively simple colour changing knitting technique that can enable even an inexperienced knitter to create seemingly complicated patterns. The technique can be applied to any knitting project and will produce stunning results.
In this class we will explore charts and try out different patterns to give you a good introduction to the technique. All you need to know is how to knit and purl!

You will need to bring 2 x 50g balls of double knit in different colours that will stand out from one another, and 4mm needles. You can bring your own, or buy from the shop at a 10% discount. You will also be provided with information sheets to take home.
